MAN OF THE YEAR - Lt. Gen. Russel Honore

MY OPINION: If Lt. Gen. Russel Honore does not get teh "Man of the Year" award I will never read "Peoples" magazine again... In addition - for his leadership abilities and response to take control of the New Orleans disater - he should be presented be promoted to a 4 star General. Click here to read the story on CNN...

New York Public Library to Sell Major Artworks to Raise Funds

My Post to the NY Times Board:
noldaker - 7:53 PM ET April 11, 2005 - New York Public Library Art Sale Comment
I just read the article Carol Vogel wrote about the art sale to raise money for the library. I read about Astor and Lenox in the article - but not one word about the man whose vision it was to build the library from the start, former NY Governor and Presidential Candidate Samuel Tilden.

I am a huge fan of Tilden's www.SamuelTilden.com, and know he would have wanted the public to enjoy every book and painting for education purposes within the library walls. I don't know if he would have agreed or disagreed with the sale of the artwork - but if it is what is needed to sustain the free library - so be it...But he would have asked the public and government education departments first to pitch in and assist the library for the benefit of future generations. It was his vision for the future to offer a free education to any and all that wanted or needed to and could not afford it. Tilden besides being a great lawyer and legal mind was also a superior mathematician - He would have audited the books closely to make sure no one was spending or wasting a dime of the library's money. Coining an old phrase - Make do with what you have - has gone out the window with the past.

There are some other very interesting posts on the site regarding this article... Many opposing the sale of the art at all.
